ABOUT US/HISTORY

Portland Bolt Northeast (formerly Bennett Bolt Works, Inc.), founded in 1978, has a rich history, originally operating as a family-owned business. Our recent acquisition by Portland Bolt will allow us to have an even bigger impact in serving our community, and extending our customer service beyond. We are a multi-state certified WBE manufacturer and distributor of fasteners for multiple industries, including highway guard rail systems, bridge construction, overhead sign structures, building construction, truss battens, and more.  We stock a large inventory of standard low-carbon and high-strength bolts, nuts, washers, and cable end assemblies. Machine shop capabilities include, but are not limited to, bending, threading, stamping, welding, plasma cutting, etc. Portland Bolt Northeast is capable of handling all grades of steel, stainless, aluminum, copper, and coatings of galvanized, zinc, and black oxide.  We proudly offer our product as 100% melted and manufactured in the USA.  Our mission is to help our customers grow by providing fast turnaround times with exceptional service at competitive pricing.

Our History

Our building is located at the center of the famous Erie Canal, which was started in 1817 and completed in 1825.  The above pictures were taken back in the day when C.L. Meech operated the factory making the finest Vintage Circa 1930s wheelbarrows and crates.  Previously, A.L. Freeman & Co. owned the factory producing 30,000 wheelbarrows a year used largely to construct and maintain the Erie Canal, being the largest producer in the U.S.

Running from Albany to Buffalo, it was the 2nd largest canal in the world.  The U.S. Congress recognized the canal as the most successful and influential human-built waterway and one of the most important works of civil engineering and construction in North America.  Canal boats were pulled by horses or mules down the towpath, and with Jordan being in the center of the 363-mile canal, it became one of the busiest villages of the time, hosting parades and providing hotels, shops, and saloons for the weary travelers and workers passing through.

In 2025, Bennett Bolt Works was acquired by Portland Bolt and Manufacturing Company to be an anchor location in the Northeast of the United States.
